Oxen.

Another unusual means of draught military transport - very usual, in fact, in places like India and South Africa, but not on the Russian Front, as here, where oxen are used to give a bit of impetus to a mud-swamped German vehicle. Best regards, JR.

I once heard a story of how the Maquis once knocked out a Panther tank being drawn by oxen to save fuel. This was just prior to D-Day IIRC. The Resistance members ambushed the Germans and hit the flank with a Piat. A bunch of French farmers hurriedly ran out and drained the greenish motor oil into buckets as they couldn’t get lubricants for their machinery during the war…
