P-38 captured!

I share with you some rare pictures (in color and w/b) of fighters Lockheed P-38 Lightnings captured and with German and Italian markings during World War II. There’s an interesting story about a captured P-38 used in active service of the Regia Aeronautica that often infiltrated U.S. bomber streams (with proper Italian markings that were hard to discern at altitude and speed)…

Why would they be captured in the Pacific and shipped to Europe when they were already deployed in Europe and, as Nick said, at least one was used by the Axis after capture in Europe?

They were used widely in the North African theater as well, that’s probably where the Italians got theirs IIRC…
