Pembroke Stephens- 1937

Journalist Philip Pembroke Stephens- shot in Shanghai while watching the fighting from a water tower, when a Japanese machine gunner unexpectedly raised his aim. The Japanese apologized, explaining that they had been shooting at snipers on nearby roof-tops. "P. Pembroke Stephens lying on the stretcher as he was being place in an ambulance to be taken to the mortuary. He had been dead for half an hour before the cease (fire) making it possible to bring him down from the tower."

Later in November, the Japanese apologized for his death. They said a MG battery turned their fire to the water tower thinking they were Chinese snipers. One bullet hit him in the leg and he fell very hard injuring himself further. A second bullet then passed through his head causing massive trauma and death. Two other French tramways workers were wounded. His death sent shockwaves through the ranks of the foreign journalists and they soon departed.
