With his Fw 190 A-8 (Werksnummer 171053) Major Josef Wurmheller collided with a comrade’s plane on June 22, 1944 near Alencon/France when dogfighting with allied fighters. By that time he was leading III. Group/Jagd-Geschwader 27 “Richthofen”. During the war he shot down 102 enemy aircrafts, 9 Soviet and 93 of western opponents including 20 four-engined bombers.
