See wind-up, pi$$-take etc. A joke based on a statement or similar known to be either stupidly or irritatingly wrong or having two meanings for the purposes of extracting a serious (and preferably over-the-top) response which is amusing to someone who knows that the statement is deliberately design to elict such a response. In a fishing analogy, one can think of the statement as bait and the response as a “bite”.

This is mainly for Erwin’s benefit, to improve his English skills while weaning him off American English onto a more expressive version .
It might help to know that “John Thomas” is English slang for a certain anatomical feature unique to males which gives rise to a few other slang expressions such as “drain John Thomas” meaning to urinate and “beat” or “throttle” and “bury John Thomas” which I will leave to your imaginations. :oops:
