Question

We’ve all heard of how the Zulus ran fifty miles a day and could still fight a battle at the end. They referred to their jog/trot styleof running as ‘Eating up the earth’. I used to know the Zulu term for this but can’t locate it in any of my books. Can anybody help?

No idea what the word you’re looking for is, but as you obviously know it certainly represents an impressive military ability that wasn’t possessed by European troops.

The incredible speed at which a Zulu impi could move could only be off-set, to a degree, by mounted troops. Over broken terrain Zulu warriors were still faster than horses. British army orders directed commanders who contemplated action against a Zulu impi to plan as if facing enemy cavalry.

Thank you for that, RS. I guess I’ll have to continue trawling the books.

Some explained Shaka’s genius off as him being a one-off, but Queen Vixtoria was very impressed by the intelligence and dignity of Cetshwayo. He too was awsome:

I tell you what you already know; do sweet FA for you; and you’re grateful!

Now, if you’d pay me about $300 an hour for it, you would be the perfect client.

Cheap at the price!

I’m used to being called cheap, but not at that price.
