The story of the Tuskegee Airmen is remarkable, but they were not the first African American Combat Pilots. Eugene Bullard was a much decorated pilot who flew for France in WWI and James Peck flew in the Spanish Civil War.
I think that they are refering to WWII…thanx for the info though.
I think that what is relavent, is that they were the first U.S. combat squadron.
The story of the Black US pilots in WWII is dramatic and noteworthy. Probably each man, officer and enlisted, was exceptional; more overall qualified than their white counterparts. Yet just like the “Flying Tigers” there are myths associated with them. Their record speaks for itself but there were bombers lost from formations they escorted.
I may have posted this previously somewhere else on the forum, but a memoir by an
American bomber pilot [can’t recall title or author] has always stuck in my mind when he referred to a fighter escort which, unlike all previous fighter escorts which wisely peeled off beforehand, flew with his bombers through the flak over his target [I think from Italy but I can’t recall the target].
He was hugely impressed and visited the fighter base to thank them, which turned out to be [a unit of?] the Tuskegee Airmen.
To that point he had no idea who they were and least of all that they were black.
the rating on it are pretty bad. so think ill wait for the DVD to come out

yeah. I saw it a few days ago on DVD. I really wasn’t that impressed.
