I already posted this in a German forum, without success.
I’ve got a medal from my grandfather who served at the western front during 1940 in Panzer-Jäger-Abteilung 246.
Was it an official medal or was it kind of self-built? If it was official, who was awarded?
The brazen medal has a diameter of about 1.4 cm.

Not an official decoration, that’s for sure.
Maybe a momento that the unit might have had made?
The inscription “andenken an die westfront” appears on various unofficial mementoes, from medals like yours to penknives, which appear to have been made and sold to the troops at the time.
Although the 'S" in '“Westfront” in your medal is different to the German (as near as I can print it) “Weltfront” in the others, which makes me wonder if it was produced in France or somewhere outside Germany unlike the other items produced in Germany?

The range of non-military issue items with the inscription suggests that they weren’t official issue, or at least that many of them weren’t. This pocket knife surely wasn’t military issue. http://www.germaniainternational.com/army27.html

I assumed that it was a WWII helmet, but if you compare the narrow neck shield in the medal with the much deeper version in a WWII helmet it could be a WWI helmet.
Or it could be a WWII medal / memento based by a lazy designer on a WWI helmet.
Who knows?
