The SS had to acquire their own weapons to a large extent at the start of the war. They were not a part of the regular Heer and so did not come under them for supply or reinforcement and were on a lower priority when they did.
This led to them using many weapons like the ZB 26 shown (forerunner of the Bren LMG) as their support weapons.
