even before the germans invaded less than 20% of russian tanks were operational. the us got 1 t34 to study and said its air filter was so badly made they tholught it must be sabotage. the russians got 2 pz iii to study and compared them against the t34. the t34 was supiour only in protection and firepower in every other res the pz iii were supiour from better layout, intercom, radio to more reliable engine and transmisson etc.

Why is it considered by so many to be the best tank of WW2?
Depends when you are comparing the T34.
The T34’s encountered by the Germans at the start of Barbarossa suffered from poor crew training and spares, the L11 76.2mm gun was also not very good. More T34’s were lost to breakdowns and abandoned than were actually destroyed in combat.
The German standard tank gun in 1941 was a 37mm which could not penetrate the T34’s 45mm sloped armour while the T34 76.2mm (especially the F34 version) could defeat all German armour. Panzer III were started to be issued with 50mm weapons but they were not capable of penetrating the T34 until quite a bit later when new 50mm ammunition was issued (it still had to be used at close range though). Equality was not reached though until the hurried adoption of the 75mm L43 on the Panzer IV (and to a lesser extent the 50mm L60 on the Panzer III) instead of the short 50mm.
The T34 was crudely finished but its engine was reliable, did not suffer from problems in the cold like the Germans water cooled engines. The broader tracks of the T34 coupled with its power to weight ratio and Christie suspension meant it had a much better cross country performance and was faster.
The T34 was cheap, reliable, powerful weapon (F34 76.2mm, Zis4 57mm, Zis S 85mm). Like the Panzer IV it was continually improved and upgraded, it was a solid workhorse that probably did more to defeat the Germans than any other tank during WW2. The chassis also served as a basis for many other vehicles flamethrowers, engineer, assault guns.
It did however have severe short comings at various stages of the war.
Two man turret, poor hatch designs, poor visibility, lack of radios, poor initial maintenance and crew training, some bad variants (equipped with engine and transmission from the BT series).
