Sgt. Mike Strank

Sgt. Mike Strank (10.11. 1919 - 1.3. 1945), USMC. Strank commanded men, who hoisted well known flag on top of Mount Surbachi (Iwojima). A few days later was killed by japanese 81 mm mortar.

wonder what he’s thinking?it’s a good pic, one i’d have on my wall if he was a relative.shame, thats what really wins the battles, the platoon and squad level leaders

I have seen a black and white of this picture; it was supposed to be from Bougainville. Rare seeing someone with a M50 Reising submachine gun this late in the war. I would have thought everyone would have been rid of theirs by 44.
