SU-76 of Wiking Division

Captured Soviet self-propelled gun SU-76 in service with 5th SS-Panzer-Division "Wiking".

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://www.ww2incolor.com/gallery/german-armored-forces-vehicles/25846/su-76-of-wiking-division

Note the white cross. I believe that had been generally discontinued quite some time before the SU-76 entered service (late '42/early '43 IIRC). The reason was that it was too visible, and offered too good a “target” for enemy fire. Was it used deliberately on captured vehicles to avoid friendly fire? Either way, I can’t think of a “feel good” outcome for the crew…

Right, Ardee, another hastily applied field made decal.

May be it will be intresting fore you, the one of the nick-names for this SPG in USSR was "Ferdinand with nacked ass"
