T-28 info

I have found the T-28 very interesting heres some info on it:

  1. The T-28 lentgth 11.1 m
  2. width 4.39 m
  3. height 2.84 m
  4. weight 95 t
  5. suspension double track
  6. speed 8 mph,km/h road
  7. range unknown
  8. primary armament 105 mm
  9. secondary armament 1 X .50 cal machine gun
  10. maximum armourmax 300 mm
  11. engine Ford GAF V-8 gasoline 410 hp
  12. crew unknown

And the army found a lost T-28 in the woods of virginia that they were searching for over 40 years and had it shipped to Patton Museum in Kentucky. Only two T-28 where made both were originally planned to invade the siegfried line. The tanks were never used, if the U.S. Army did use the tanks it’s armour is thick enough to repell flak 88’s.

The range is 160km says wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-28_Super_Heavy_Tank

Very interesting tank.

thanks :slight_smile:

heres some info i have on it.

Crew: 8 (commander, driver, co-driver, gun crew (5))
Battle Weight: 190,000 lbs
Tack Width:19 1/2 inches
Minimum Armor: 25mm
Engine: Ford GAF v-8 petrol. 410 HP
Ammunition Stowage: 62 rounds of 105mm, 660 rounds of .50 cal

Traverse: 10 degree left and 10 degree right
Elevation limits: +19 1/2 to -50

Intresting facts

The cast hull was 2/3 length of track assemblies, and set towards the rear;
The 105mm gun was set in a ball shaped mantlet of 12in armor;
There were two tracks on either side of the hull;
The outer track assembly could be removed for transport by rail or road running in confined surroundings;
The two detached tracks could then be joined into a "dumb"unit and towed behind the main vehicle.

The duel tracks give it a real beastly look!

mm hmm, it looks like a beast.

does anyone know if any german anti tank weapon can penetrate 300mm of armor?

No PAK Anti-tank weapons had that ammount of penetration, even the flak 18 would get stopped about 1/3rd of the way through.

Looks like the same idea as the British Tortoise tank.

Nice idea in principle, but they’re pretty useless in reality - they attract fire from every gun on the battlefield, they’re far slower than conventional tanks, they can’t traverse their gun so they have to turn the whole tank to engage enemies, they use far more fuel than conventional tanks, they break down more due to their heavier weight and they take far more production effort than a normal tank.

it takes at least three shermans to provide enough track parts for a T-28! and the T-28 is not that tall so it will be a fairly low target thats easy to hide behind tall bushes

Will the tall bushes be fitted with tracks so they can drive in front of the tank while it advances?

what i mean is that it can hide behind tall long bushes because the T-28 is not that tall, its fairly low.

But as soon as the tank moves the bushes it can hide behind are gone.

By the way, at 2.84m it is actually taller then the Perishing and the T-34, the same height as the Tiger and only marginally (like less than 10cm) shorter than the King Tiger, Comet and IS-2.

And I’d rather take any of them into a battle than the T-28.

yeah but if u were in any of those tanks and was to be confronted with a T-28 you couldn’t kill the T-28 with its thick armour.

I like the design, but pity that was made a single intention even

only TWO of these tanks were made :x

Get round the back and you can kill it.

Or take out the tracks and call in an artillery or air strike.

Plus of course taking out the tracks means it can’t aim its gun at you, so you can sit there putting as many shells as you want into the side/rear armour

And capture it?

Once a tank is immobilised, you can do what you like with it. A tank that can’t move is as good as dead.

have something to haul it on to a platform and tow it away and inspect this wonderful machine.

Could do, but then the Germans spent enough time designing their own stupidly heavy, useless in the real world tanks so I doubt they’d have much to learn from this.
