A happy mother and son. I hope they adjusted to a normal life after what they had been through.

A lucky man to have made it back home. Well, at least his body did, but what what about his mind and soul?

Let me very briefly share a few glimpses of returning veterans and ex-POW’s from my neighborhood in a Hungarian city. Case 1. screamed at everyone and killed himself; 2. never said a word, stared in the distance, suicide; 3. threw stuff at his kids and pet, unemployed, supported by wife; 4. the first day home, ate a full meal on an empty stomach and died of it 5. an army physician, very depressed, morose, killed himself. I recall only one happy ex-POW, nursing a big glass of cold beer with sheer delight.

May they rest in peace.
