The British Home Guard

August 1940: the British Home Guard - then the local defence Volunteers - in training. Many young men got their first taste of military training in the home guard until they were old enough for the real thing.

Hi JR…the TV series “Dad’s Army” kind of made fun of the Home Guard but we should all remember that at the time, after Dunkirk, they and the Canadian First Division were the only units left to defend Britain until the remnants of the British Army could be reorganized. So at the time it was VERY likely that these kids and older men would be Britains last stand. So as comical as it seems now…these men were prepared to fight and die for their country. We must never forget.
