From D-Day to the end of the war, the 1str Battalion, Calgary Highlanders suffered a greater number of casualties (killed and wounded) than any other infantry battalion in the Canadian army in northwest Europe; 403 Highlanders were killed in action and 1354 were wounded. The high casualties were the direct result of the battalion’s oft-repeated role as leading element in the campaigns of the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade.
