The Dostler Case

The photos showing the execution of German General Anton Dostler are pretty familiar:

The story behind it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Dostler

Although I knew about this case for years I just found out that there’s a clip existing: http://de.video.yahoo.com/watch/1849936?fr=yvmtf

A justified verdict or “victor’s justice”?

What’s even more interesting is the several refusals of officers to carry out the orders initially and then the dismissal from service of the officer who refused to carry out the order, which undermines the “if I didn’t follow orders to execute people I would have been killed myself” defence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_zu_Dohna-Schlobitten_(1899-1997)

Dostler gets no sympathy from me!

You dance with the devil, expect the devil’s due.

And my hats off to Dohna-Schlobitten. Even in the abyss of war, you can still be decent.
