The Politcal spectrum - Human rights abuses.

Under what sort of rule are people more liable to encounter civil rights abuses in the forms of repression of free speech, torture, illegitimate denial of the right to life (an actual term!), State supported violence, and domestic espionage.

It has been claimed that liberal democracies are as susceptible to these matters as any other form of government.

Your views please.

I think that is a terrible thing. People who took part in Human rights abusing must be punished.

A lot of countries suffered this class of abuses.

Argentina had them
Chile had them
United Kingdom had them
Central America had them
Africa had them
Middle East had them

of those nations in that list what are the defining characteristics of the perpetrating nations, for instance, Theocracy, Democracy, Electred Dicatorship, Military Junta?

Im trying to establish whether one particular form of leadership is more prone to abuse.

Surely there is a certain degree of truth in the saying that ‘Power Corrupts’. Put someone in a position where they could torture and abuse human rights, and only the very strong will resist the temptation if they are given the slightest means to justify it. Look at Gutanamo bay, and ponder on the civil rights restrictions that are creeping in here in the UK.

Also, very few of the so called ‘democratic’ systems are truely open and accountable, in the UK for example, it has been said that all we do is choose our dictator and his cronies (parliament) for the next five years, as we can’t boot them out half way through.

Although I think this latter point is a bit far-fetched, I think it does demonstrate that every system of government is open to abuse, and that the different systems are not as far removed from each other as you might be lead to believe by their various champions.

A

All authoritarian regimes have proved themselves prone to abuse.
Of course when the time is right, the people too feared and the voices so low, “Democracy” can claim some prizes…
