The Six Nations dates back to 1883 when the six nations tournament brought together the four British nations. France joined the competition in 1910 and Italy in 2000.

The origin of Rugby in England goes back long into the 19th century and even earlier. In 1800’s formalities were introduced to football rules in the seven major public schools of England. Six of the seven schools were largely playing the same game (including Eton, Harrow and Winchester) - while the seventh, Rugby School (founded in 1567) at Warwickshire, was playing a markedly different version of football.

It is no coincidence that this school prospectus has a rugby post in the foreground of its main picture:

But I am enjoying this article.
Well, that particular school is in New Jersy, USA…perhaps it should be in the ‘Only in America’ thread?
Italian Rugby
The Italy national rugby union team represent the nation of Italy in the sport of rugby union. The team are also known as the Azzurri (the Blues). Italy have been playing international rugby since the late 1920s, and today are considered to be in the top tier of european rugby and compete annually in the Six Nations Championship with England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Arguably, Italian Rugby really came to prominence in 2000 when it was added to the Five Nations, creating the Six Nations. Originally on the end of some heavy defeats, the side has grown in competitiveness, recorded a fourth place finish in 2007, and even in defeat, lop-sided losses are becoming far less frequent. Italy are ranked twelfth in the world by the IRB as of 23 March 2009.
Italy have also competed at every Rugby World Cup since the first tournament in 1987, but have yet to progress beyond the first round. Their best showing thus far has been in 2003 and 2007 where they managed two wins during the pool stages.
