I just thought I post a bit about the regiment of the county I now live in (although from all over the west country, my family have finally settled in wiltshire).

The 62nd was formed in 1756 and merged in 1881. Originally from Exeter the regiments was given the county of Wiltshire as it’s county title in 1782 and recruits would henceforth be taken from there.
The 99th was formed in 1824 and merged in 1881. Originally raised in Glasgow under the title ‘Lanarkshire’ it became a wiltshire regiment upon amalgamation with the 62nd in 1881. It is from this regiment that the phrase ‘dressed up to the nines’ comes from, due to the excessive amount of gold lace that the officers wore.
