Seems man piloted Mustang.

Terrible incident.3 dead 56 wounded. But Pilot saved a lot of lifes at last moment he’s turned the fighter aside from crowd.
Brave man, he fought to the most end.

There’s a big photo of the P-51 shortly before it crashed showing it missing a section of the tail… :frowning: I’m not a fan of airshows, after having witnessing the 1986 crash of the Blue Angels at Niagara Falls…

So it was damage of aircraft. If the elevator control was lost he was doomed on this altitude. It happend within couple of second.I’m either not a big admirer of ww2 aircraft race( god, how old those aircraft should be?). Not so far i wathed the documentray on Discovery channel about this race in Reno. It was said that the all aircraft were built 50-60 years ago. Don’t understand the peoples who fly such a raritet. They looks great like new but though…

It looked to be the elevator control in fact. I’ll see if I can find the photograph they showed on CNN news…

A different view of the crash. It gave me a chill when I seen the crash.

Galloping Ghost also crashed in 1970.

The Reno air show is a little air-war rather than an air show, almost every years there’s a crash with deads and woundeds.
I think this happens for two reasons: 1) it’s one of the most exasperated air shows in absolute, with an extreme competition probably over the correct limit.
2) Often, the US warbirds pilots, like to overperform their aircrafts. I mean, they don’t use them for what they are, ancient aircrafts that need a faithful restoration and careful attention, especially in flight, but they like “transform” them in acrobatic aircrafts or high speed planes with old warbirds semblance.
I think this is dangerous and unpelasant. The pilot of this P51, a few days before the air show boasted to have modified the engine for maximum power and for impressing everyone by its new speed. Often, behind these disasters there’s this wrong, and dangerous, mentality.
