We had a neighbor whose wife had been in the German Air Force in Weather control during the war. He married her after the war as a GI stationed in Germany. As a youngsters we were playing in their yard one day and she was gardening. She had her Black boots from the war. The entire heel had a steel cleat and the leather was beautiful and of good quality. How she got them out of Germany and to USA I don’t know, but now they were for working in the garden.
