Zeno’s Warbird Video Drive-In Big July 18th Anniversary Newsletter

Hello World War 2 & jet aircraft fans –

It’s seems like only yesterday, but it’s been 18 years since I launched Zeno’s Warbird Video Drive-In http://www.zenoswarbirdvideos.com web site in the summer of 1997, featuring four aircraft videos (P-38, P-51, B-17 & B-24) streaming at 28.8 kbs dial up speed at 5 fps in a tiny 160X120 pixel window. That’s Stone Age tech by today’s standards, but before YouTube, it was a big deal & we were soon featured as “Site of the Day” on CNN. The rest is history!

You are invited to stop by & celebrate our 18th Anniversary at Zeno’s Warbird Video Drive-In to view our July selection of eight exciting films streaming over the Web in broadband. There’s a brand new high quality print of one of our most popular videos, “The Fight for the Sky” that I’ve digitally restored plus two more premiers.

As always, all of the videos showing on our web site are for your free viewing pleasure. Please help “spread the word” by liking us on Facebook!

Now showing in July "At the Matinee"at Zeno’s Drive-In. Free admission!

*The Fight for the Sky NEW High Quality Print – Digitally Restored. In February of 1944, General Jimmy Doolittle “turned loose” his fighters to go after the Luftwaffe where they lived. This marked a radical change in strategy from the disastrous tactics of 1943 that kept escorting fighters chained to bombers. Now, US fighters, including the P-51, probed deep into Germany, catching the opposition on the ground, inflicting mortal damage.

* Cadet Classification NEW Digitally Restored - Narrated by Ronald Reagan. Most young men who joined the Air Corps wanted to be a pilot, but it was up to training schools to determine where they made the best fit: “Bombardier, Navigator or Pilot.” Candidates went through an extensive screening process, including physical fitness, high altitude survival, mental aptitude under stress (graded by an early computer), physical reaction time, coordination and agility and morel. * A-20 Havocs in Color Plus 415th BG Scrap Book Exclusive Documentary
See rare color footage of 416th Bomb Group A-20 Havoc (aka Bostons) attack bombers taken before the Group transition to A-26s in the fall of 1944 – plus many memorable still photos from Group photog, Sergeant Cachat. Includes over 200 pictures, including dramatic combat shots, detailed photo analysis of target strikes in France, Belgium, and Germany, and some of the most memorable crew photos we’ve ever seen.

*Mastering the Bazooka Rocket Launcher The bazooka is the great granddaddy of all modern man portable anti-armor rocket launchers. It was a revolutionary weapon that combined a “stove pipe” rocket launcher, pioneered by Dr. Robert Goddard, with a shaped charge warhead, originally developed by Swiss immigrant Henry Mohaupt for the US War Department in the 1930s. As you’ll see, shaped charges focused a superheated penetrating jet of gas whose effect on armored targets was far out of proportion to it’s relatively small size. The Bazooka put this awesome destructive power in the hands of a single soldier with a range of hundreds of yards.

*The Parachute Rigger New! This in depth film covers all aspects of parachute rigger training, including 3 months of camp, jump school, laying out, rigging, packing and repairing chutes using a variety of specialized tools, jump master duty and rigging & dropping heavy equipment including jeeps & artillery using multiple chutes.

* River Patrol Restored Color. The USS Harnett County (LST-821) served as a floating base in the China Sea for PCF swift boat and helicopter patrol operations in the Mekong River Delta during the Vietnam War. The labyrinthine Delta was a hot zone in the war against well-organized Viet Cong insurgents. (IMO this documentary was an inspiration for “Apocalypse Now.”)This beautifully photographed film is the real thing – a “slice of life” documentary showing daily operations aboard the Harnett County and exciting action on swift boat river patrols & Huey helicopter gunship ground support missions.

Land and Live in the Desert for World War 2 Air Crew This remarkable film dramatization was used in World War 2 to train US aircrew on how to survive a crash landing in the desert. After getting really shot up, Army Air Force B-24 Liberator “Pippin” lands 400 miles from their nearest base, 60 miles from the nearest watering hole, on the desolate sands of North Africa.

Recognition of the Heinkel He177 Bomber The Heinkel He 177 Greif (Griffin) was intended to be the Luftwaffe’s number one long range heavy bomber in World War 2. Designed before the war, it was built in large numbers. Unfortunately for its crews, it was also tasked with performing precision dive bombing. That resulted in an unusual low drag design where two engines were grouped in a single nacelle on each wing, which proved to be the aircraft’s Achilles heel. —

We also show 1940-45 vintage WWII Army & Navy films and pilot’s manuals on how to fly the F4U, F6F, P-38, P-39, P-40, P-47, P-51, P-61, TBF/TBM, AT-6/SNJ, B-17, B-24, B-25, A-20, A-26, B-26, B-29, and Stearman N2S. Alert! - don’t miss the F-86, B-47 & B-58,
