Was field marshal Erich von Manstein a member of the Nazi Party?
I’ve never read directly about Manstein, but from what I have read I would severally doubt he was a Nazi. Most senior officers cut from the Prussian cloth tended to be conservative monarchists or republicans and had a typical disdain for the Nazis lawlessness and overall belligerence which they found uncouth to say the least…
Manstein also served as an advisor to the West German polizei/NATO and then the Heer/Bundeswehr. I highly doubt he would have been allowed to if he had ideological convictions of Nazism. But according to Wiki he had antiemetic views as many Germans of his generation did and he blindly followed Hitler until clashing with him later in the war leading to his sacking in 1944. I looked at some Antony Beevor and he stated that Manstein may well have had some Jewish lineage and he ironically may well have been aware of it…
