We’re about to change our standard pistol “at work”. The unloved Heckler & Koch P7 is going to be sorted out (rumours say some police forces in Afghanistan will be equipped with our old iron) in favour to the Walther P99 (P9).
What would our experts say? Are we improving?
Oooohhhhh yes! Unquestionably!
Were there many accidents with ND’s on the draw with the P7?
Some. Not in my institution though (we had some accidents actually but no weapon in the world could be blamed for those) but in our federal state some “misadventures” occured during pursuing actions due to the P7’s infamous safety mechanism (sorry, don’t know the English term for “Griffballensicherung”).
grip safety.
Who thought that was a good idea? Really? Squeezing 3 fingers on the draw can squeeze the fourth by reflex if that finger is where it shouldn’t be…
Right, it’s bad enough with shooting. Many colleagues actually squeeze much harder as necessary hence they “snatch”. Of course it’s even worse while running including several uncontrolled movements…
However the P99’s safety system is not supposed to be state-of-the-art as well. Anyway, I got practical and theoretical instruction coming up…
The P99 is as good as any other double-action/single-action system around for police use.
