Why Nimitz turned down CinCPac command in 1941

When the Pacific fleet was first deployed to Pearl Harbor, Admiral James Richardson (then commander of CinCPac), complained to President Roosevelt, about the saftey of the fleet and got fired for doing so. FDR then offered the
CinCPac command to Chester Nimitz, who turned it down.

This seems kind of odd to me, turning down a command like that, that’s what
a Navy officer ordinarily wants and works all his life to get.

FDR then choose Husband E. Kimmel, who took command in Feb of 1941.
After the Pearl Harbor Attack, Kimmel was replaced by Nimitz. So, I guess
Nimitz changed his mind. Anyone know any more about all this?

Sorry, all I can do is recommend you look for the biographys of Nimitz. unless you luck into a historian of the subject you are unlikely to find anything usefull on this on the internet. Get down to the library as the books are probably the only reliable source for this.

I think Nimitz did not want a war over which Admiral got what positon (there was alot of infighting.)

Gives some insight.
