I believe that feature is for unruly toe nails. (or perhaps the odd sixth toe) 
Unruly toe nails probably wouldn’t match the knitted tank’s barrel position and angle, but they would be an excellent reason for covering up the whole foot and nails with a knitted tank, or anything else.
Egads !!
Perhaps those toenails are a challenge to knitters to devise a V-3 supergun slipper ? JR.
