WW2 relics rediscovered

This one from Northern Russia (2005) amazed me, imagine having a walk in the woods…

Yes, imagine walking in the woods in the Philippines and finding an gleaming Japanese Type 97-kai complete with a very old, but very much alive, Japanese soldier!

US fighter plane recovered from lake after 65 years

An F6F-3 Hellcat was just recovered from the bottom of Lake Michigan near Waukegan Harbor/Illinois after almost 65 years.
The pilot couldn’t manage to slow down the plane while landing and ended up in the lake on January 5, 1945. The pilot, today 89-years-old Walter Elcock, could be saved. His grandson pushed the recovering of the aircraft.

Here’s the Nat’l Geographic video of the raised Hellcat and an interview with the pilot:

Jeez! Aside the most tragic part of this…isn’t it staggering in which condition the body is? Do you know when exactly these photos were taken?

Apart from the poor bastard losing his lower legs.

Probably been in a peat bog or similar.

Because of the density and acidity of the soil and water there is little opportunity for the organisms which aid decomposition to thrive, so a body can exist relatively intact for a very long time. It’s what provided us with a lot of ancient bodies relatively intact.

Yup. Than think of it being extremely cold in late autumn through spring…

Sorry there is no date of when these pictures were taken. Its on many different forums with post dates with years 2007-2009.

Pretty haunting…

Indeed. But how the hell did they find out that these soldiers were Nazis?

Ref the overturned Sherman

I believe this was on another website a few years ago and it is on a Pacific Island.

The story involved a surviving crewman on a visit to that island.

Once upon a time at a scrapyard in France…

I see birch trees behind the wreck, typical for Northern Russia. I remember reading it was the Murmansk area, the place where a lot of Lend & Lease material arrived.

Zebra mussels they get into everything around the Great Lakes.

Well, if its in fair salvage condition the owner has a million dollar toy in his yard.

My God, what a pity…

If only those fools knew they were essentially scrapping a Ferrari or Lamborghini…
