This is one of those cases where you cannot be sure of what you are seeing, other than a person with a knot or bump over the left eye.
At first, instance you may jump to say it a female, but, then again, could just be a male with long hair.

I think this is his cap, with fur lining or something similar.

Japanese flying helmets were lined with either sheepskin or rabbit fur.
