Sad and Barbaric fate that I consider severe and harsh punishment!

Agreed. Firing squad is more merciful but this execution is designed to instill fear in the populace as a reprisal for collusion with the enemy. The thought of a bullet turning off your breath immediately or the noose choking it out of you over several minutes… well, you choose!
