Probably he wanted to gave a closer look at the B-17 before the absturz.
JG 3 ( sturm) vs B-24 liberatos, note in this video that the acuraccy of the pilots improves with relation of my earlier film, the shooting range is closer and the widespread use of 30mm guns caused serious damage to the bombers.
