Panzer projects & prototypes.

That’s pretty ridiculous… and I’m disappointed by the design, too

Aye, the rounded edges aren’t Germany’s style…

Not only that - It looks like a turned-around bath tub!

A bath tub with guns…

Or an industrial furnace mounted on a tractor…

The British also had landship plans in WWI, and construction of “The Flying Elephant”, but then had second thoughts and broke it up in 1917 before it was completed. Weight was estimated at 90tons.
Regrettably, to my knowledge no photograph of the Elephant under construction has surfaced.

Flying elephant ? I tought the extasis was a modern invention

More pictures of the Massive K-wagen. The Sponson or barbettes 77mm guns were emplaced in that way because in ww1 the targets for tanks were mostly infantry, so in that way the gun could fire at either side when it cross the trench

MinenräumGerät Krupp mit PzKpfw IV antrieb.

In late 1940 Krupp was responsible for designing and testing a roller device for mine destroying purposes. It consisted in 3 heavy steel barrels attached to the Panzer IV tank by swingwing arms, every roller weighted in excess of 1,5 tons.
2 were emplaced at the front of the tank stepping ahead of the track paths and one in the rear, acting in the middle exploding any mine left active by the the front devices. The dispositive was strong and simple, but the Panzer was very difficult to steer with it and all the development was dropped in 1941.

VK 6501 (H)

In January 19th of 1939, Henschel was ordered to develop a heavy 65-ton class tank with similar layout to BW (Bataillonfuhrerwagen). Designated as Schwere Wagen (Sturmwagen) VK6501(H), it was intended to be a heavier version of Panzer IV. Krupp was put in charge of the turret development and production. Three different armament configurations were considered - 75mm KwK L/24, 75mm KwK L/40 and 105mm KwK L/20. In June of 1939, first configuration was accepted and in March of 1940, it was decided that the turret to be used was to be a modified turret used on DW (Durchbruchwagen) tanks. In April of 1940, wooden model was produced and Krupp was ordered to produce first trial turret.

Armament consisted of the turret mounted 75mm KwK 40 L/24 and 7.92mm MG34 (modified DW turret) and small turret mounted in the hull armed with 7.92mm MG34 (some sources state there were to be two small turrets). Prototype and early models were to be protected by 80mm thick armor, while production models were to be protected by 100mm thick armor. The running gear consisted of ten interleaved road-wheels and three return rollers with 800mm wide tracks.

The maximum speed was to be between 20 and 25km/h. For transportation purposes, VK6501(H) could be taken apart into three main modules: forward module with driver’s compartment and transmission, fighting compartment and the engine compartment.

On September 1st of 1939, 0-Serie was ordered to be produced. Assembly was to be done by Henschel, while armor, turret and armament were to be provided by Krupp. In mid 1940, work on mild steel prototype began but entire project was halted in October of 1940.

In mid 1941, turretless prototype was completed and delivered for testing at Sennelager proving grounds. VK6501(H) prototype was never completed with the turret and in late 1941, entire project was cancelled and scrapped in 1942, in favour of the development of VK3601(H). The main reason for cancellation was the fact that the vehicle due to its size and weight was considered to be tactically and logistically problematic in deployment and use.

Ferngelenkt Minenräumwagen “Ente”

Ferngelenkt Minenräumwagen ( remote controlled mineclearing vehicle)
A curious variation of the Bordgward Sd.kfz 300 ( 1th serie), it was a concrete chassis explosive carrier with an amphibious capacity. It had a external steel shell to create the bouyancy. this external plate was thin, from 4 to 5mm of carbon steel wich did protect the Ente ( duck) from only small arms fire at 100 meters ( not including armor piercing rounds)

The Ente had a 55 hp 4 cilinders engine wich drive the tracks and used a propeller for water impulsion reaching 3 km/h in water and 6 km/h over ground. Only 2 prototipes were made in late 1940.

Good image of an Ente next to a Sd.kfz 300 II serie and pzklbfl 1.

That would have been a nice tank. Not as nice as the Panther, but the Germans wouldn’t have been so surprised at the Russian tanks if they’d had something like this already in use or about to be.

Agreed, but i guess the german did not had the “motivation”· of the sleek lines of a T-34 advancing towards the grenadiers with armor piercing rounds bouncing over it glacis with no effect…

Probably they in 1940-41 still felt the war could be won with only light and medium panzer.

Another amazing thread.

Thank You

Amazing topics came from amazing members, you re welcome.

So, amazing members don’t make amazing topics anymore  I’m so confused!

Jk PK, your topics are great.

Feuerleitpanzer ( versuchswagen)

Panzerkampfwagen auf Einheitsfahrgestell III/IV

Very few information has survived about this design.
The Panzerkampfwagen auf Einheitsfahrgestell III/IV placed the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.J turret on a totally new hull. The armor was sloped on all surfaces and slightly thicker than that of the Pz.Kpfw.IV, it used also the strong transmition elements of the Pz III.

The suspension had three pairs of leaf-spring mounted roadwheels on each side. Series production was planned but abandoned in mid-1944 in favor of more Panthers. According to some sources 3 prototipes were made by Krupp-Grusonwerke, but aparently there are no pics of those.

By the way the Einheit III/IV apparently used the same 3 x 2 leaf suspension and chassis of other krupp projekt, the self propelled howitzer 10.5cm Sd.Kfz 165/1.

Rare thing that it wasnt adopted for series production, it was a more simple, cheap plataform for armored vehicles.

Honestly, this is probably the most interesting thread we have produced here so far.

Of course, with 202,920 view is the most viewed topic of ww2incolor forum.
