I finally found it, the beast! Vega Flying Test Stand
Carson1934
I apologize for my extended leave from this site which caused the several month hiatus of this thread.
That being said, you are absolutely correct, my dear Mr. Carson, that is indeed the Vega Flying Test Stand, alias Lockheed Altair 8-G, registration number NX18149!
Your turn!
Welcome back Wingsofwrath!
OK let’s pick up where we left…following is my enigma…good luck!
Carson
Sorry it won’t upload I’ll try another server
Errr… It’s a bit of a tough one, I can’t identify it right of the bat, so I’ll just nip round to the ol’ internet for a spot of research.
Later Edit: Ha, found it, Piaggio P10, a 1932 three seat reconnaissance aircraft built only in prototype form! My hunch that the overall resemblance to the IMAM Ro.43 wasn’t accidental paid off…
Besides, you always had a soft spot for the really obscure Italian flying boats, my dear Mr. Carson, so it was only logical to look at planes from your home country first. The tricolour fin flash with the arms of Savoy (not actually visible, but not many countries have a white band with a device on it in the middle of their tricolour) was also a big clue, and it gave me a very definite time frame.
Also, now that I think about it, the dark circle under the pilot’s cockpit must be the fascist emblem, common to all the aircraft of the era.
So - where is a new aircraft for us to wonder about?
Well, since you’re so keen to give it a go, here is the new enigma- I took some liberties with the picture, mainly to erase a very prominent aircraft registration number which would have given it away and to take some precautions against “drag and drop” Google image search (yeah, they introduced that a few months ago and now you can let the computer do all the hard work for you if you want to cheat at this) so you’re welcome to try:
Good hunting!
Except for vert. stabl. and landing gear resembles some Swed.Hatuna Klemm aircraft; also has similarities to Ryan planes. Tail looks a lot like Chance Vought - but I’m still looking.
Yes it is indeed a Piaggio P10…anyway I have noticed that you already proposed a new enigma…
Carson
It looks very much like an argentinian Ae C4 but I doubt it is as there’re about fifty aircrafts looking much the same!
Carson
My dear Mr Carson, let me tell you that you are very close indeed. You are certainly looking on the right continent, it’s just the country that you’ve got wrong so far. Keep searching!
My dear Wingsofwrath,
I think I got it!
CNNA HL6B “Carué” a brazilian trainer of 1944 powered by a Lycoming engine.
BTW as we are talking about brazilian aircrafts would you have a pic of the C.N.N.A. HL8 a three engined light passenger aircraft of which one item only was built by Cia. Nacional de Navegaçao Aerea in 1944?
Cheers
Carson
Excellent, you got it!
Unfortunately, the only image of the “Companhia Nacional de Navegação Aérea” HL8 I know of can be found on this site (in Portuguese) in the second to last picture: http://www.museutec.org.br/resgatememoria2002/old/enciclop/cap002/025.html
Your turn!
Thanks very much for the link Wingsofwrath (reading portuguese is not a major problem for me, being very similar to spanish and consequently to italian).
Now here’s my next challenge (not italian this time!)
Cheers
Panchovilla
heh. You’re out of luck on this one, I know the actual aircraft in the picture, not only the type. It’s the Hamilton Metalplane H-47 registration number NC-879H, the sole survivor of this type of aircraft.
Also, Portogese, especially in written form, does not pose significant problems for me either, since Romanian is one of the romance languages (arguably one of the closest to latin) as neither does Spanish, even though I never studied them. (Italian and French do not count since I learnt them both in school)
Also, here’s today’s question:
Hi Wingsofwrath andf congratulations for spotting so quickly the Hamilton H-47 (with ID number!).
Your challenge seems to be a trifle more difficult but I’ll have a go.
Could that be a civilized version of the IMAM Ro37 with V engine FIAT A30 R.A.?
Carson
Nothing gets past you, does it Mr. Carson?
You, are, of course, 100% correct, this is indeed the first prototype of the IMAM Ro.37, equipped with a 560 hp Fiat A.30 engine rather than the 600 hp Piaggio P.IX radial of the latter variants.
Please proceed with the next enigma!
Good evening Wingsofwrath
I’m glad I guessed correctly as I wasn’t cocksure of my doings!..anyway here goes the pic of a very beautiful biplane of the early thirties (my favourite period)
Cheers

This will probably take a while to crack, but judging by first impressions (and a handy visible roundel on the bottom wing) I’d say it’s most likely French in origin.
Later Edit: Surprisingly, a lot easier to find than I feared: Blériot-SPAD S.510, the last French biplane fighter, entered service in 1936.
See, it wasn’t that difficult! A Bleriot-Spad S510 indeed (first flight 1932). Wasn’t it a beauty?YOUR TURN ESTEEMED WINGSOFWRSTH
Cheers
Carson
Thank you, my dear Mr. Carson for such a nice enigma!
Since I know for a fact you like interwar float planes, I hope you will enjoy identifying this speedy little machine:
