Thank You for your quick reply to my introduction post. I really did not expect to hear from anyone.
My Dad “William P Leary” (deceased) served with the 8th Naval Construction Battalion between 1942 and 1946. They were in the Alutions, San Francisco, Hawaii and Iwo Jima. I know he was a coxwain and pipefitter (drove landing craft and performed as craftsman).
What I am looking for is any historical link, artifact, file locator, etc… that could more clearly shed light on the 8th’s roll and accomplishments. The cruise book is an excellent resource but is really generic. It was written by a public relations officer and speaks in very general language. It is more like a sea story than a log book.
I hope this is a little more clear.
I have inspired my surviving siblings to scour their artifact lockers in search of military records, letters and photographs that I will gladly share.
Oh To be honest… This is too difficult to be found
Because it is rare to find a source which talks specifically about men
who were not famous like most soldiers, As you said : general talking
I will try to search too ( A try may be useful )
And report you with any achievements
OK so I am introducing myself but with the current turmoil I refrain from giving my name as it is of no historical consequence anyway
I will poke around for a while
Don’t know what you’re talking about, pal, but I removed some stuff from your post you’re not entitled to use. If you got problems with that take it to Firefly, the Chief mod.
WTF are you on about?
There’s no turmoil here.
You gave your name, asmotj, and you’re correct, it is of no historical consequence.
And I do hope you’re not being cute with your name representing “a smotj” being a member of the SMOTJ.
I don’t like Asmotj…he seems up to no good…
Look Sun, you cuss and accuse and deny any turmoil that in itself is turmoil?!
now as to being A smotj…
It is an acronym but which SMOTJ are you referring to there are hundreds of results on the web?
Did any one read my other post? More importantly did any one meet know or hear any stories about Bailey?

Wow cannot take a joke!
See! lol
Asmotj is a weird sounding name…why don’t you change your username to something like Hermasmotj, or perhaps AsHermanator or maybe even asmerman…it would look cooler and you could be cool like me!
ASMOTINATOR:army:
Guten Tag! I just joined today. My interests are many; however, lost German opportunities in WWII interest me most–especially the failure to mount punitive raids for the Mers-el-Kebir travesty.
You look suspiciously like someone trying to manufacture turmoil.
Here’s a formal warning from a moderator: Stop it.

In the cruise book it mentions a delegation of men who were trained in jungle fighting. This, I believe would have been right up my Dad’s ally as he had prior military service in the Army. Is there a resource for records of such special combat training? I also wonder if their are records of non-judicial punishment like for being absent without leave or altracations between the troops?
Hello everyone i joined this site because i am looking for an answer to my search about a polish badge that i picked up many many years ago in Warsaw.
I was told it was of an armoured division that fought in E.T.O., i since have lost it  but i can recall it had a scorpio (my star sign) on it.
Now i understand it could be the Polish 4th Armoured.
It was a black enameled cross with a scorpio, any pictures anyone?
Regards
Paolo
Howdy, fellows, I’m a newbie on this site, a gold prospector out here in the South Dakota Black Hills.
I do have a question: I’ve read that the British 17-pounder cartridge case was necked up to make the 84mm British tank gun cartridge, and then that case was necked up to make the 105mm. tank gun cartridge. Could anyone enlighten me if this was true? It seems logical enough.
Incidentally, I’m also a collector of military firearms. I enjoy practicing with the M1 carbine, AK 47 and 74, M4 carbine, and the M1 Garand as well as the .45 auto.
Thanks for any information you might furnish.

Hi. I am interested in the invasion of Sicily in WW2. I think it was called the Husky campaign. I am travelling to the Mediterranian this fall and will be going to the Museum there. My father (now deceased) was in this campaign and like most vets he refused to talk about it except to say that their worst bombing came from the Allies when they were landing. I’ve read a bit of this campaign and want to know if all the troups went by glider? If anyone can suggest any reading materials I would appreciate it.
Welcome to the forum, and I would suggest reading both the Rick Atkinson books Day of Battle and An Army at Dawn.
Many, many thanks! Looks like I have a bit of reading to do.
…you don’t have to read any books at all. With this forum, all you have to do is read the Threads, ignore the comments from newbies and take for granted that anything posted by RS and his Pose , are as good as being the word of God. …I know!
Herman’s absolutelly right !!! And an advice from a newbie , if you want to accept it , dont try to prove something to this guys you will always have the same outcome you will proven wrong (some times actually) . But you will gain 1 one thing : you will learn stuff you thought you knew !!! And trust me this “feeling” is really good !!!
