Welcome to the Forum, toastmaker! You’ll find not only fantastic pictures, but nice people and their stories…
Thank you very much - many interesting stories and knowledgable folks here -
My name is James McWhorter, and I happened onto your site while doing research on one of my many “projects”. I now use this site as a primary research tool when working on one of my kits, and refer this site to the members of the Georgia Mountain Modelers Association (GMMA) on a regular basis.
I’ve just joined although I wasn’t old enough to serve during WW II. But I’ve written a book, “Child on the Home Front”, about growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area during the World War II and Korean War eras. In addition to the local history of the period the book has some amusing stories about life in the 1940s and '50s. One photo I couldn’t include in the book is shown in my Child on the Home Front album. It’s a photo I took of a cannon at the Presidio of San Francisco in the mid-1940s. Perhaps someone could identify it for me. Thanks in advance, Robert R. Talley, former MSGT, USAFR.
Welcome to the Forum!!!
ps - I gave a look to your profile, but i couldn’t see the picture you’re talking about. The “Child on the Home Front” album does’t have any pic…
Welcome, jmac0414. James, it is good to have you join. I have been here a couple of years, and I enjoy the fact that there are members from all over the world. I am rather local, in College Station, Texas, where I graduated from Texas A&M College, Class of 1957. I am back as a retiree now. I like your avatar, and use one similar to it. Today is a historic day, the 150th anniversary of Fort Sumter being fired upon. Enjoy the site.

“Many have asked who I am, yet I too have a question
By what am I defined?
Warrior and schemer; poet and dreamer
I am so close and fast, yet lagging far behind:
Our Existence is a mystery beyond all ken.”
Where does everyone find their cool avatars?
Hi.
Some new members don’t troll back through the new member’s forum. I joined seven years ago and enjoy it. I’ll repeat my first entry for you.
I am Ken Garner, was born 1930. Left school in 1944 and worked as a naval messenger on the Grimsby naval base HMS Beaver. Called up for National Service in the Royal Artillery and joined an Ack Ack (3.7 guns) Three months after demob, I joined the Royal Air Force, tained as electrician fitt/air and joined 617 Squadron (The Dam Busters) at RAF Binbrook and worked on Avro Lincolns and the New Canberra B2 and then the B6 which took to Malaya for six months. Received the Cadet Forces Long Service Medal and the Commandants Commendation. Now 81, i still do my bit at the local aviation museum and help my wife breeding miniature poodles.

Welcome aboard. Sounds like you have seen some exciting times.:army:
Hello I just joined the forum today, although I have been to this forum for several months just reading some of the threads and man is there a lot of interesting topics, so I thought I would join and post some one and awhile.
Any way I’m Joe and am a firefighter and love WWII history (really any history), my grandfather served with 8th Air Force during WWII.
I hope I can contribute to some discussions in the future.
Welcome to the site, Joe.
Unfortunately this very thread pretty much sank into oblivion lately.
Thanks for the welcome, even if the thread is not viewed much its a good place to introduce your self.
Hello to all,
I’m a Vietnam vet (navy) and recently wrote a novel (WW2 Pacific) dedicated to my father and father-in-law, both WW2 vets. Whoa, wait, don’t throw me off the forum yet! I’m not a scammer, not here to promote the book, but to research for a second novel since I enjoyed researching and writing the last one so much.
I was lucky enough to meet a man (former Marine PFC) who guarded the atomic bomb pits on Tinian and his accounts kept me from making a couple of errors that couldn’t have been solved by research. So I’m hoping to tap into the knowledge here, if you don’t mind. Thanks,
JohnB
