Panzer projects & prototypes.

Is not, that vehicle (normal Panther ausf F) used a kwk 42 75 mm.

From panzerbaer.de :

[Which means (my translation, not being an expert in the German language): E-10 series was to replace the 38(t). Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz in Ulm worked to create a series of light panzers called 38(d), that came to look much like the 38(t). SPz´s, light- and medium Jagdpanzer´s and Wafenträgers were developed]

Hier einige Typenbeispiele: [examples of types]

JgdPz 38 (d) 105mm PAW 1000 [in turret] [was there a prototype 105mm PAW 1000??]
JgdPz 38 (d) 105mm StuH 42/2 L/28
SPW 38 (d) [APC(?)]
JgdPz 38 (d) 75mm PaK 39 L/48,

Weitere Varianten waren: [other variants]

Jagdpanzer 38 (d) 75mm PaK 42 L/70,

PzKpfw 38 (d) / Jagdpanzer 38 (d) 80mm PAW 600,

Flakpanzer 38 (d) 2 x 20mm Flak 38 and 2 x 30mm MK103,

leichter [light] Waffenträger (Leichte Einheits-Waffenträger) 88mm Pak 43 L/71 (Ardelt I),

leichter Waffenträger 105mm leFH 18/40 L/28 (Ardelt I),

mittlerer [medium] Waffenträger Größe I (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 37mm Flak,

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe I (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 75mm PaK 40 L/48,

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe I (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 75mm StuK 42 L/70,

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe I (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 105mm leFH 18/40/5 L/28 (Ardelt II),

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe II (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 88mm Pak 43 L/71 (Ardelt II),

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe II (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 100mm K18,

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe II (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 128mm K18/3 / K43 L/55 (Ardelt II),

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe II (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 150mm sFH 18/6 L/29.5 (Ardelt II)

The GröBe II seems to have had 5 roadwheels instead of 4.

There´s a few small pictures on that site as well.
Line drawings or model pictures anyone?

Thanks, great pictures!

Steyr-Krupp… Ardelt… Krupp… I suppose the programme didn´t progress far enough for the Wehrmacht to choose a design?

The Ardelt design with the normal 38t running gear was chosen as the winner and prototypes with this running gear were produced in late 1944.

Production models were to be mounted with the 38d running gear, new transmission, Tatra-103 motor, new idlers and drive sprockets and a 38 d prototype armed with the 88mm Pak 43 was successfully tested in late April 1945.

Page very slow but there are drawings in the instructions.
Hope this helps!

I see, the Tiger saved the Germans from something even worse

Pretty compact for such a heavy vehicle, and must have been funny looking from the ends, with half the width taken up by tracks.

Any pictures of this vehicle during trials or in mock up form?

Not that I knew, but you know how is this topic, everyday new stuff came out, so is possible that in a near future we wiill have some photo of the VK 6501.

The VK6501 looks gigantic but is dwarfed by later projekts like the Löwe, Maus, Ratte, King Tiger, etc.

And that’s how Russian tanks defeated German tanks…

Trosky talking about tanks , amazing.

He did build the Red Army…

Can’t see the picture…

Fixed!

Few foreigners to the Soviet Union have been in a better position than Erich Wollenberg to write about the foundation and early history of the Red Army. Despite some political weaknesses, his book offers valuable testimony to the character of the Red Army in its early years as well as to its degeneration and decapitation under Stalin. The qualitative change it underwent in the 1930s, nowhere more vividly described than here, is an indispensable aspect of the rise of Stalinism. The whole previous history of the Red Army was subsequently rewritten and distorted. The role of its founder, Leon Trotsky, was expunged from the record altogether, while that of Stalin and his supporters was grossly exaggerated. A major virtue of Wollenberg’s book is that it sets the record straight on these matters.

I think I must get this book…

I was obviously kidding but it seems my humour is becaming a little rusty.

LAUSTER WARGEL LW-5 Bergepanzer

At the request of WaPrüf 5 (Department for the Study of Engineering Equipment) in 1943, the firm Lauster in Stuttgart built a modular vehicle to be able to tow new heavy German armored vehicles in development for the German army.

When the two separate armored units were mated, each equipped with a Maybach HL 108 motor developing 235 horsepower, the vehicle could pull up to 53 tons (about enough to tow German armor up to a Panther tank).

The machine was thoroughly tested on the ground, where even a test spade was attached to dig trenches with satisfactory results, but the LW-5 did not proceed past the prototype stage despite its potential.

Judged as too slow, cumbersome, and with only pivotal steering, the LW-5 towing concept faded into obscurity as latter German heavy tanks were usually towed by other heavy tanks via cables and in some cases, even experimental armored RATO units!

The Wargel part of the designation comes from the Swabian word “wargeln” which means to roll.

Technical Data:

Length: 12.4 m
Height: 3 m
Width: 3.56 m
Maximum speed: 30 km/h.

I’ve heard the Germans even resorted to using Oxen to tow panzers in Normandy!

Speaking of my avatar… somebody want to find me a cool German one?

3.7cm Selbsfahrlafette L/70

Design of 1935 by Reihnmetall Borsig. A long AAA flak gun mounted in a fully traversible turret with coaxial machinegun

The chassis was an armored Hansa-Lloyd-Goliath Zgkw 3t. No much more data available, it was tested by cavalry units in 1936.

What are the colours on that last photo, with so many early camo photos this one shows the “sand yellow” in great contrast to the others, pre blitz camo.

Sorry, but I only have that pic, in B&W no idea which could be the colours.

looks sorta like a Sd.kfz251.
