Hello. My name is Linda Eastman and I am searching for information about my father’s Army service. My father passed away in August 2007 and we are trying to trace his military service. The warehouse in St. Louis where his military records were evidently burned some time ago and we can get no assistance from the US Government. My father’s name was Robert L. Eastman. In 1946 he enlisted in the Army. He served in the last mounted calvary unit to be sent overseas. He and his mare were in Japan around 1946-47. I believe he was originally stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas before he went overseas. I have pictures of him in uniform on his mare and at one time had his patch and spurs. I have tried every thing I can think of to find a roster of the mounted unit that served in Japan. I believe he said it was the 7th Calvary but I cannot find any verification of this. He was a lifetime member of the 1st Calvary “First Team” alumni association but I do not know who to contact there who would have information on this unit. Since my father joined the Army at 18 and would have turned 80 in November 2007, I doubt that many members of that unit are still alive. If any of you are still out there or if the family members or any Calvary historians are out there who could help me with my quest, I would appreciate any information you can give me. I am the family historian as well as Robert’s only surviving child. My brother, Captain Michael C. Eastman, was among the 248 soldiers of the 101st who were lost in the crash in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada on December 12, 1985. They were coming back from a peacekeeping mission in the Sinai. We are planning to hold a family memorial service in August 2008 and I would like to have some information before then if at all possible. Thank you for any information or direction as to where I can get this information in advance.
Hello Linda. I’m not a cavalry historian nor am I particularly good with requests like yours. But when I was in high school, my barber told me how he was in the US Army occupation forces in Germany and how he had just missed WWII. He mentioned that although he was infantryman by MOS, he had been sent over with a “constabulary division” and he was given basic law enforcement and internal security training.
I think perhaps your father’s horseman skills were utilized probably is some sort of a security and occupation vein, not unlike a mounted police patrolman, and that he may well have been detached to another unit for this purpose. In other words, he may not have been in a true “cavalry” unit at all. Or his unit was essentially used as a mounted policing force…
I hope this helps. Regards and best wishes…

Hello moe! Duff 's good aint it
Hi there,
I was researching for my own site and stumbled across WW2inColour and have to congratulate you guys on a terrific site.
I wasn’t around during the war being only a bairn at 50:D
Like most boys as i grew up i took an interest in things military,my father and brother both served in the RAF.
I’m not that great at all the shoot-em-ups out on the pc,ps3 ect I leave that to my 16 year old son.
However i have been involved with an on-line MMG for the last 8 years,i stumbled across that too when i got bored of the shoot-em-ups:rolleyes:
Anyway,it is more of a thinking tactical and team game,so if you have a spare few minutes come on over for a gander.
Bill
