Congrats ftg!
I might be absent over the next few days as my home internet modem or connection or service appears to have been damaged in a storm yesterday, which took out another computer at home as well. It’s Friday now and I resist coming in to work on weekends, so I mightn’t have any internet access.
Coincidentally, I’m moving house this weekend so probably won’t have much if any internet between now and monday. Of course, I’ll have a 10 MBit connection after that, so it has some compensations.
Back online in the new flat…
Yep, lost the modem, router and one of the home computers in the storm. My broadband service should deliver a new modem in a couple of days.
That sucks! Maybe worth investing in one of those surge protectors.
My computer, the modem and the router were all on the same surge protected power source but my computer survived unharmed. No idea why.
My wife’s computer was on a different power source with a surge protector but was still fried. Then again, she did buy her surge protected power board at The Reject Shop, which is a chain store which doesn’t exactly carry top of the line products. A third computer at home was on and was undamaged, without a surge protector. Go figure.
The safety switch on the main switchboard tripped, but obviously not quickly enough to stop some excess current, maybe from a lightning strike on the transmission line, getting through.
Could be that the lightning hit the telephone line, rather than the power line. That would happily blow the modem but not the PC.
My ISP was supposed to deliver the new modem today, but the fuckwits stuffed it up and booked it in for tomorrow. Which I found out after wasting half of today at home waiting.
I’ll have to arrange another time for next week, so I’ll be off air a fair bit until then.
Turns out that the fuckwits didn’t cancel today’s (read ‘tomorrow’ in my last post) delivery as instructed, to enable me to find another time when I could waste half a day at home waiting for Godot.
Unlike yesterday when they hadn’t turned up close to noon in the 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. bracket they promised, they contacted me today at about 7.40 a.m. to say they were only 20 minutes away. So naturally I grabbed it.
And they turned up just before 9 a.m.
I have to get one of their clocks and use it to determine my time at work. I could arrive at morning tea time and be gone before lunchtime.
Anyway, I’m back on line.
Going through a similar experience with my new ISP - the delivery arrived OK (thanks to UPS, not the ISP), but the phone line doesn’t work at all. When phoning up said ISP to get it fixed, they tried to make me stay in all day to be ready to meet the guy, then agreed to put a time on it when I had a go at them. When he phones up this morning, nobody has told him anything about it. Fortunately he isn’t a complete arse, so was more than happy to work around me.
Been there as well! The ‘between 8AM and 12PM’ is absolutely not useful. I understand the technician has a schedule, but it would be nice if he’d call when he finishes a job before driving to the next house, so that the next person doesn’t have to wait from 8-12, but maybe only the last hour.
I’ll be away for a couple of nights, starting tonight.
I’ll be away this weekend as well - looks like it’ll be spam heaven!
My baby boy was born on Wednesday night (after being 9 days overdue), he and his mother will return home from the hospital by today. Guess I will have to check here after everybody’s asleep though.
But, if anyone needs teeth whitenings or penis enlargements, today’s probably the day to grab some online ads.
Man, I thought you had already got him sleeping through the night
I’m on the look out for handbags, Viagra, fake-Rolex’s, timeshares, and Nike shoes–and have readied my PayPal! Finally, I’ll have a chance to review this stuff before you guys deprive my of my internet consumerist right for my really big weekend…
Mmmh, wish I’d have succeeded in doing so with my older son…
Just to make you feel better, I was visiting a friend this afternoon, and their daughter (3 months old) is currently sleeping 23 hours a day!
A kingdom for 4 hours at a stretch…sigh.
